Pillars (Shahada, Wudhu, Prayer, Fasting, Ramadan, Zakat, Pilgrimage, and more)

Beliefs (Allah, Angels, Prophets & Messengers, Scriptures, Judgement Day, and more)

Etiquette (Islamic Phrases, Attire, Gender Boundaries, Visiting Masjids, Hadith & Sunnah, and more)

Including certificate of completion

* Must attend 80% of the course (10/12 classes). Scholarships available upon request.

Meet the Instructors

  • Gabriel Esparza

    Lead Instructor

    Gabriel grew up in Southern California, where he converted to Islam in 2013 during college. He attended graduate school in Columbia, Missouri where he and his wife lived for 4 years, before relocating to Mesa, Arizona. Gabriel has had the privilege of learning about Islam through several personal mentors while also continuing to learn from the scholars and programs that he regularly enjoys engaging with. He has been an active member of the Muslim communities he has lived near and served as a volunteer with Good Tree for the last 3 years.

  • Becki New

    Instructor

    Becki grew up in East Mesa, Arizona and later moved to Florida where she became a Special Education teacher. She converted to Islam five years ago after a student and his family invited her to learn about Islam. Recently she has been finishing up a degree in Addiction Counseling and has studied Islamic Counseling with Al Balagh Academy. She is married with one teenager, volunteers with Good Tree Institute, and is a committee member of Compassion Connection at ICC Tempe Masjid. Lately, Becki spends her time doing needle arts of Tatreez and Tariri.

  • Erica Shelton

    Instructor

    Erica is a high school Spanish teacher in the East Valley and has been an educator for over 20 years. She became Muslim two years ago and has spent much of that time learning about Islam and deepening her understanding of the faith. As a convert, Erica is excited to help new Muslims learn about their faith in a way that feels approachable. Outside of teaching, she enjoys traveling, cooking, and crafting. She lives in Mesa with her husband and their two cats.
