Unlocking the Meaning of Ni‘mah: Exploring the Quranic Root N-‘I-M (نَعِمَ) and Enjoyment of Allah’s Blessings
What does it really mean to be blessed?
In our everyday language, ni‘mah is often translated as blessing—something to be grateful for. But the Quranic root N-‘I-M (نَعِمَ) reveals something deeper: that Allah doesn't just give us blessings to acknowledge—but to enjoy.
In this month’s root word reflection, Dr. Nadia breaks down the beautiful root of ni‘mah and its powerful presence in the Quran.
The Root of Ni‘mah: To Enjoy
Dr. Nadia begins by reminding us that ni‘mah is being blessed by Allah—but its root also means to enjoy.
“The aspect of enjoyment often gets downplayed,” she says. “When you think of a blessing, you don’t think of an enjoyment. Whereas Allah (swt) whatever He has given us, He wants us to enjoy it. That’s why He calls it ni’mah.”
This root reminds us that Allah wants us to find joy in the blessings He provides. The food on our tables, the laughter of loved ones, a moment of stillness—all of it is ni‘mah when recognized and received with gratitude.
Two Dimensions of Ni‘mah in the Quran
Dr. Nadia highlights that the Quran points us to two layers of ni‘mah:
1. The Outer Ni‘mah: Blessings We Can See and Use
Everything Allah gives us—wealth, time, relationships, skills—are blessings. But we have a choice in how we engage with them:
If we use them our way, we may find temporary pleasure.
But when we use them Allah’s way, the blessings become a source of healing, growth, and true fulfillment.
When we operate ni’mahs His way, "you get full enjoyment that has healing in it Dr. Nadia explains.
2. The Inner Ni‘mah: Connection and Peace
There is also the inner ni‘mah—the joy of being connected to Allah, surrendering to Him, and loving Him. This inner state of contentment is referenced in Surah Al-Fatiha:
“The path of those whom You have blessed…”
(Quran 1:7)
Ni‘mah vs. Mataa‘: Deep Enjoyment vs. Superficial Pleasure
While ni‘mah refers to the profound, God-given blessings meant to be enjoyed deeply and purposefully, the Quran also uses the word mataa‘—meaning superficial or fleeting enjoyment.
Mataa‘ can satisfy momentarily, but ni‘mah fills the soul. Recognizing the difference is key to living a life of intentional gratitude and connection with Allah.
